šŸ”§ Charger - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Charger’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth power, good fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; it can come on unexpectedly.
  • āš ļø Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Shop towel
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was recently running.
  • Open the hood and set the hood prop/verify hood struts are holding.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to locate the large black plastic air box near the front of the engine bay, connected to the intake tube.

Step 2: Open the air box

  • Release the metal clips around the air box cover by hand.
  • If your air box uses screws instead of clips, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver. Don’t force it—plastic can crack.

Step 3: Lift the cover and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust inside the lower air box. Do not drop debris into the intake.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge is fully seated all the way around (no pinched corners).

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-engage all clips by hand, or snug the screws with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly closed on all sides.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Recheck the clips/screws after a short drive if you hear any unusual intake noise.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
