šŸ”§ Traverse - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Traverse’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps performance, fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep anything from falling into the air box or intake tube.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was running.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the air box clips clearly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box near the front/side of the engine bay, connected to a big intake tube.

Step 2: Open the air box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box lid by hand.
  • Lift the air box lid up just enough to remove the filter. Don’t force the lid.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the air box for leaves or dirt.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose debris from the air box.
  • Wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits so it seals properly. Don’t push dirt into the intake.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the lid back into position.
  • Re-lock all the retaining clips by hand.
  • Visually confirm the lid is evenly seated on all sides.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15-30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (a sign the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check the clips and the lid alignment if you hear unusual intake noise.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
