🔧 Camry - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the plastic air box on the right side of the engine bay. A clean filter helps the engine breathe better and can improve fuel economy and performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25–0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Work with the engine off and the key out of the ignition.
  • 🔸 Let the engine cool if it was recently running to avoid hot parts.
  • 🔸 Do not unplug any sensors on the air intake tube; they are delicate.
  • 🔸 Keep tools and debris out of the open air box so nothing falls into the engine.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔸 10mm socket
  • 🔸 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🔸 3" socket extension
  • 🔸 Flathead screwdriver (medium size)
  • 🔸 Flashlight
  • 🔸 Shop vacuum with small nozzle
  • 🔸 Clean rag
  • 🔸 Mechanic gloves
  • 🔸 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔸 Engine air filter element (for V6 engine) - Qty: 1
  • 🔸 Air box cover clips - Qty: 2–4 (optional, only if any clips are broken)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔸 Park your Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸 Turn the engine off and remove the key or switch off the ignition.
  • 🔸 Open the hood using the hood release inside, then the safety catch at the front.
  • 🔸 Use the hood prop rod to secure the hood if your car has one.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • 🔸 Stand in front of the car and look to the passenger side (right side as you face the car) of the engine bay.
  • The air filter box is a black plastic box connected to a large plastic tube that goes toward the engine.
  • Use the flashlight if needed to see the clips and screws around the air box.
  • Trace the big plastic intake tube to find the box.

Step 2: Release the air box cover clips

  • 🔸 On your Camry, the front edge of the air box cover is held by metal or plastic clips.
  • Use your fingers or the flathead screwdriver to gently pry and unclip each clip from the cover.
  • Do not bend them too far; they can snap or lose tension.
  • Work slowly so the clips don’t fly off.

Step 3: Remove any 10mm bolts holding the air box cover

  • 🔸 Some V6 Camry air boxes also have 10mm bolts on the rear or side of the cover.
  • Use the 10mm socket, 3" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove any visible bolts on the air box cover.
  • Set the bolts aside in a safe place so you don’t lose them.
  • Reinstallation torque for air box bolts: 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs)

Step 4: Open the air box cover

  • 🔸 Once the clips and bolts are removed, lift the front of the air box cover upward.
  • The rear edge of the cover is usually held by plastic hinges or tabs; pivot the cover up without forcing it.
  • Do not pull hard on the attached intake tube or any sensor wiring; just open it enough to access the filter.
  • Lift only as much as needed to slide filter out.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • 🔸 Note how the old filter sits in the box: rubber sealing edge usually faces up, paper pleats downward into the box.
  • Grab the filter by one corner and lift it straight up and out using your hand.
  • If it is stuck, gently wiggle it a little while pulling.

Step 6: Clean the air box (optional but recommended)

  • 🔸 With the filter removed, you’ll see the bottom of the air box.
  • Use the shop vacuum with small nozzle to suck out any leaves, dust, or debris.
  • Use a clean rag to wipe around the sealing surface where the rubber edge of the filter sits.
  • Do not push dirt into the opening that leads toward the engine.
  • Keep the vacuum nozzle away from sensitive sensors.

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • 🔸 Take the new engine air filter out of its packaging.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge is clean and free of damage.
  • Place the new filter into the air box with the same orientation as the old one: rubber edge up, pleats down, and edges fully seated in the groove of the air box.
  • Check that the filter sits flat and is not twisted or riding up on any side.
  • Correct seating is critical for keeping dirt out.

Step 8: Close and secure the air box cover

  • 🔸 Swing the air box cover back down, making sure the rear tabs or hinges engage properly with the lower half.
  • Check that no part of the new filter is pinched between the cover and the box.
  • Reinstall any 10mm bolts you removed using the 10mm socket, 3" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Tighten the bolts to 5–7 Nm (44–62 in-lbs). This is snug, not very tight.
  • Re-latch all clips by pressing them back into place until they click.
  • Run your fingers around the seam of the air box to confirm it is fully closed and even.

Step 9: Final under-hood check

  • 🔸 Look around the air box and intake tube and confirm no tools, rags, or parts are left behind.
  • Make sure all electrical connectors and hoses on the intake tube are untouched and secure.
  • Remove the hood prop rod and close the hood firmly.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔸 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. It should run smoothly with no warning lights.
  • 🔸 Gently rev the engine once or twice from inside the car; listen for any odd whistling or hissing near the air box that could indicate a poor seal.
  • 🔸 Take a short test drive; if the check engine light stays off and the car feels normal, the job is done.
  • 🔸 Plan to replace the engine air filter every 15,000–30,000 miles, or more often in dusty conditions like rural or construction areas.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60–$120 (parts + labor)
