🔧 Camry - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and dust out of the intake system. On your Camry, this is a quick maintenance item that usually takes only a few minutes and helps keep airflow clean.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Make sure the engine is off and fully cool before starting.
  • Keep loose clothing and fingers away from moving engine parts if you run the car during testing.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the airbox while the cover is open.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool (specialty)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the car.
  • Open the hood and secure it fully.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air box

  • Locate the black plastic air filter box near the front of the engine bay.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver if needed to gently release any retaining clips.
  • Some covers use only clips, so no screws may be present.

Step 2: Remove the air box cover

  • Unclip the air box cover and lift it carefully.
  • Do not force the cover.
  • If the intake tube restricts movement, use the trim clip tool (specialty) to help free the cover tabs without breaking them.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old engine air filter straight out of the air box.
  • Keep the opening covered while the filter is out to prevent dirt from entering the intake.

Step 4: Clean the air box

  • Use a clean cloth or vacuum to remove loose dirt from the air box.
  • Do not use compressed air.
  • Check that no leaves or debris are sitting in the bottom of the housing.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the seal sits flat all the way around.
  • The filter should not be pinched or folded.

Step 6: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Set the cover back on the air box using the flat-blade screwdriver only if a clip needs gentle help.
  • Press the clips down until they lock in place.
  • Make sure the cover is fully seated before closing the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual intake noise.
  • Check that the air box cover is sealed properly.
  • Close the hood securely.
  • Replace the engine air filter at regular service intervals or sooner if driving in dusty conditions.
