🔧 Traverse - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Traverse’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, can improve throttle response, and helps protect the engine from dirt.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10-15 minutes before working near the engine bay.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers and loose clothing away from belts and fans.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool to avoid scratches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box and intake tube near the front/side of the engine bay.
Step 2: Release the air box cover
- Release the metal/plastic latches holding the air box lid (most can be flipped by hand).
- If a latch is tight, gently help it with a flat-blade screwdriver (do not pry hard).
- If a plastic clip needs popping up, use a trim removal tool (specialty) to lift it without breaking it.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
- Pull the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves or dirt.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface
- With nitrile gloves on, wipe out loose debris from the lower air box by hand.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube opening.
- Don’t use shop air; it can blow dirt inside.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber edge (gasket) seals all the way around.
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the air box lid and align it with the bottom half.
- Re-engage all latches/clips by hand.
- Do a quick tug-check: the lid should not lift or shift.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and listen for any loud hissing (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
- Check that all latches/clips are fully locked and the intake tube is seated.
- If the engine runs rough right after, re-check that the filter is seated evenly.
