🔧 Equinox - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This helps your engine breathe clean air, improves performance, and can help fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work with the engine off and the key out of the ignition.
  • 🛑 Let the engine cool if it was just running; parts under the hood can be hot.
  • 🛑 Do not disconnect any sensors or wiring on the air intake tube.
  • 🛑 Keep tools and loose parts away from the serpentine belt and fans.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 8mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 3" 1/4" drive extension
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • 🧰 Work gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses
  • 🧰 Clean shop rag

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 📦 Engine air filter element (for 1.5L turbo) - Qty: 1
  • 📦 Air box sealing gasket or foam (if damaged) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park your Equinox on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔑 Turn the engine off and remove the key or switch off the start button.
  • 🧊 Let the engine bay cool for at least 10–15 minutes if it was hot.
  • 📦 Open the hood using the hood release inside the cabin, then the latch under the front edge of the hood.
  • đź’ˇ Take a quick photo of the air box before opening.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the engine air filter box

  • Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • Stand in front of the vehicle and look slightly to the driver’s side of the engine bay.
  • Find the black plastic box with a large plastic tube running from it toward the engine; this is the air filter box.
  • Use your work gloves and safety glasses before continuing.

Step 2: Inspect how the air box is held together

  • On your Equinox, the top half of the air box is usually held by metal clips and/or small bolts.
  • Look for any metal clips around the edges and small bolts with 8mm heads.
  • Notice how the lid overlaps the bottom for easier reassembly.

Step 3: Release the air box clips

  • If your air box has clips: use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry each clip away from the lid, then flip them off the edge.
  • Do not bend the clips too far; they are spring metal and can snap.
  • Place the released clips where they won’t fall into the engine bay.

Step 4: Remove the air box screws (if equipped)

  • If you see bolts along the edges of the air box lid, use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension to loosen and remove them.
  • Turn counterclockwise to remove each bolt.
  • Set the bolts aside in a safe spot; do not drop them into the engine bay.
  • These bolts are small; when reinstalling, just snug them hand-tight, do not force them.

Step 5: Open the air box lid

  • Check that no wiring or sensors are attached to the lid; they should be on the intake tube, not the lid itself.
  • If needed, slightly loosen the clamp on the intake tube using a flathead screwdriver to give the lid a bit more movement, but do not remove the tube.
  • Lift the lid up gently from the unclipped/unbolted side, then slide it away from the hinges or tabs on the other side.
  • Prop the lid open with your hand or rest it carefully without straining any attached hoses.

Step 6: Remove the old air filter

  • Look inside the air box and you’ll see the rectangular filter element.
  • Note which side faces up and how it sits in the box.
  • Grab the filter by the plastic frame and lift it straight up and out.
  • If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling up.

Step 7: Clean the air box

  • Use a clean shop rag to wipe out any dirt, leaves, or dust from the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not use water or cleaning sprays inside the air box.
  • Make sure no debris falls into the intake opening leading to the engine.
  • Clean box helps the new filter seal better.

Step 8: Install the new air filter

  • Compare the old filter and the new one; they should be the same size and shape.
  • If the new filter has an arrow marked “Airflow,” follow the same direction as the old one.
  • Place the new filter into the air box with the rubber or foam sealing edge facing the lid side, fully seated in the groove.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around with no gaps at the edges.

Step 9: Refit and secure the air box lid

  • Set the lid back into place, first aligning any tabs or hinges on one side into their slots.
  • Press the lid down evenly over the new filter so it compresses the seal.
  • If you loosened the intake tube clamp, slide the tube fully onto the lid and snug the clamp using a flathead screwdriver hand-tight only.
  • Check that no part of the filter is pinched or exposed.

Step 10: Reinstall clips and screws

  • Reattach the metal clips by pushing them back over the lid edge until they snap into place.
  • Reinstall any bolts using the 8mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Tighten the bolts clockwise until snug; for small plastic air box screws, use light pressure only: about 3–4 Nm (2–3 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten; you can crack the plastic air box.

Step 11: Final under-hood check

  • Make sure all clips are latched and all bolts are installed.
  • Check that the intake tube is fully seated and the clamp is snug.
  • Remove any tools or rags from the engine bay.
  • Lower and close the hood securely.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔄 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute; listen for any unusual hissing or whistling near the air box, which could mean an air leak.
  • 🚦Take a short test drive; the engine should run smoothly with no warning lights.
  • đź“… Note the mileage and date; replace the engine air filter roughly every 20,000–30,000 miles, or sooner in dusty conditions.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
