🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

The engine air filter on your RAV4 sits in the air cleaner box under the hood. Replacing it keeps dirt out of the engine and helps maintain fuel economy and throttle response.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the vehicle in Park on level ground and the parking brake set.
  • Let the engine cool if it has been running.
  • Keep tools, hands, and the new filter clean so debris does not enter the intake.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface and open the hood.
  • Make sure the engine is off.
  • Have the new air filter ready before opening the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Open the hood and find the black plastic air cleaner box near the front of the engine bay.
  • The air filter is inside this box. No torque spec applies.

Step 2: Release the air box clips

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers to release the retaining clips on the air box lid.
  • If your RAV4 uses a hose clamp or duct clip at the intake tube, loosen it only if needed to lift the lid.
  • Do not force the cover.

Step 3: Lift the air box lid

  • Carefully lift the top half of the air box enough to access the filter.
  • Use a trim clip tool only if a plastic retainer is tight.
  • Keep the intake opening clean while the box is open.

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Check the housing for leaves, dirt, or debris and remove it by hand or with a clean cloth.
  • Do not let debris fall into the intake.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the rubber edge seats evenly all the way around.
  • A crooked filter can let dirty air bypass the filter.

Step 6: Close the air box

  • Lower the lid back into place and make sure it sits flush.
  • Reinstall and lock all clips by hand.
  • If you loosened an intake clamp, tighten it snugly with a flat-blade screwdriver. No factory torque spec is listed for this clamp.

Step 7: Final check

  • Make sure the air box is fully closed and all clips are secure.
  • Close the hood and start the engine.
  • Listen for any unusual intake noise that could mean the lid is not seated correctly.

✅ After Repair

  • Drive normally and confirm the engine runs smoothly.
  • Recheck the air box clips after your first drive.
  • Replace the filter sooner if you drive in dusty conditions.
