🔧 XT5 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your XT5’s engine air filter sits in the air cleaner box and keeps dust and debris from entering the engine. Replacing it helps maintain airflow, fuel economy, and smooth performance—especially if you drive in dusty areas.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, tools, and loose clothing away from the electric cooling fan—it can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool for 10–15 minutes if it was just running.
  • Have a shop towel ready so no dirt falls into the intake.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a small flashlight to find the large black plastic air box (air cleaner housing) near the front/side of the engine bay, connected to the intake tube.

Step 2: Open the air box

  • If your air box uses metal/plastic latches, release them using a flathead screwdriver (gently pry only as needed). Don’t force clips—wiggle them.
  • If your air box uses screws/bolts, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.

Step 3: Lift the air box cover

  • Lift the top cover up just enough to remove the filter. Use a shop towel to catch any loose dust.
  • If the intake tube makes it tight, do not yank on it—reposition the cover carefully by hand.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe dirt from the air box only—do not push debris into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Set the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out (the rubber seal should sit flat all the way around).
  • Make sure the filter is fully seated with no corners folded or pinched. A pinched seal can let dust past.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box cover back into place by hand.
  • Re-latch the clips using a flathead screwdriver if needed, or tighten screws with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug, not over-tight).

Step 7: Final check

  • Use a small flashlight to confirm the air box cover sits evenly and all clips/screws are secured.
  • Remove tools and the shop towel from the engine bay.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for unusual hissing/whistling (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • If you hear a leak sound, shut the engine off and re-check the filter seating and latches/screws.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
