đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the vehicle OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle area.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the air filter box (usually a black plastic box with clips/screws and a large intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight and find the large black plastic air box connected to a big intake tube.
- You’ll see either metal retaining clips or a few small screws/bolts holding the lid on.
Step 2: Open the air box (two common versions)
- If it has metal clips: use a flat-blade screwdriver to help pop the clips open if they’re tight (carefully so you don’t slip).
- If it has screws/bolts: use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet (or a Phillips screwdriver if they’re Phillips) to loosen/remove them.
- Tip: Put fasteners in a cup.
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter (some lids hinge; some lift off).
- Pull the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Look inside the lower half of the air box for leaves or sand.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing area
- Use your hand (with nitrile gloves) to remove any large debris you can easily grab.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube opening.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure it sits flat and the edge seal is fully seated all the way around.
- Tip: A crooked filter can leak dirt.
Step 6: Reclose and secure the air box
- Close the lid fully so the edges meet evenly.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or reinstall screws/bolts using the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (or Phillips screwdriver).
- Snug fasteners firmly—do not over-tighten plastic.
Step 7: Final check
- Visually confirm no tools are left in the engine bay (use the flashlight).
- Make sure the air box lid is fully closed and all clips/fasteners are secured.
âś… After Repair
- Start the vehicle and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box isn’t sealed.
- If a check engine light appears, re-check that the air box lid is fully seated.
