📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🔑 Turn the vehicle OFF and keep the key fob at least 10 ft away.
- 👀 Open the hood and locate the air filter box (black plastic box with a large intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air cleaner housing
- Look for the black plastic air box connected to a big rubber intake tube.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before working in the engine bay.
Step 2: Open the air box
- Release the metal clips by hand. If a clip is tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- If your air box uses small bolts instead of clips, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Tip: Don’t force plastic; it cracks easily.
Step 3: Lift the air box lid
- Lift the top cover just enough to pull the filter out.
- Do not yank on the intake tube; keep the lid supported and relaxed.
Step 4: Remove the old filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Note how it sits: the rubber edge seals against the air box all the way around.
Step 5: Clean the air box sealing area
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt from the air box rim and inside the lower half.
- Do not drop debris into the intake opening.
Step 6: Install the new filter
- Set the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the seal is not pinched or folded.
Step 7: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the lid fully so the edges meet evenly.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug only; do not over-tighten).
✅ After Repair
- 👂 Start the vehicle and listen for any hissing/whistling (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
- 👃 If you smell fuel/exhaust or the engine runs rough, turn it off and re-check filter seating and air box clips.
- 🧾 Write down the mileage/date for your maintenance record.
