🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

Your XC60 uses a serviceable engine air filter inside the air cleaner box. Replacing it keeps airflow strong and helps the turbo engine breathe properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Make sure the engine is off and fully cool before starting.
  • Keep dirt and leaves out of the air box; even small debris can get into the engine.
  • Do not start the engine with the air box open.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade trim tool
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and secure it fully.
  • Keep the new filter sealed until install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter housing

  • Locate the air cleaner box on the left side of the engine bay.
  • Use a Torx T25 screwdriver to loosen the housing screws if equipped.
  • Use a flat-blade trim tool to release any retaining clips on the cover.

Step 2: Lift off the cover

  • Carefully lift the air box cover straight up.
  • Do not yank on it; check that all clips and screws are free first.
  • Lift slowly to avoid dropping dirt inside.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old engine air filter out of the air box by hand.
  • Inspect the inside of the housing for leaves, dust, or debris.
  • If needed, wipe the inside clean with a dry cloth.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around.
  • Do not force it; a proper fit should feel natural.

Step 5: Reinstall the cover

  • Set the cover back on the air box.
  • Reattach any clips by hand, then snug the Torx T25 screwdriver screws if equipped.
  • Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs) if you are tightening cover screws.

Step 6: Final check

  • Make sure the housing is fully closed and sealed.
  • Close the hood.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual intake noise.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the engine idles normally.
  • Check that the air box cover is secure.
  • If the old filter was very dirty, you may notice slightly better throttle response.
