📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and secure it fully.
- Assumption: your Passat uses the standard sealed airbox with top clips and Torx fasteners.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the airbox
- Locate the engine air filter box on the top of the engine bay.
- Use the Torx T25 screwdriver to remove any airbox cover screws if equipped.
- Release the airbox clips by hand or with the flat-blade trim tool if they are tight.
- Keep the intake opening covered.
Step 2: Lift out the old filter
- Lift the airbox lid carefully and set it aside.
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
- Check that no leaves, dust, or loose debris fall into the lower airbox.
Step 3: Clean the airbox
- Use your hand to wipe out loose dirt from the airbox.
- Do not let debris fall into the intake tube.
- Make sure the old filter seal did not stick to the housing.
Step 4: Install the new filter
- Place the new engine air filter into the airbox in the same direction as the old one.
- Press it down evenly so the seal sits flat all the way around.
- A crooked filter can let dirt past the seal.
Step 5: Reinstall the airbox lid
- Set the airbox lid back in place and make sure it seats correctly.
- Reinstall the clips by hand.
- If screws were removed, use the Torx T25 screwdriver to reinstall them.
- Tighten snugly only; there is no high torque spec for this cover.
✅ After Repair
- Make sure the airbox is fully latched on all sides.
- Start the engine and listen for any unusual hissing or whistling.
- Check that no tools or rags were left in the engine bay.
- Replace the air filter at the recommended service interval or sooner if you drive in dusty conditions.
