🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the intake. On your Golf, this is a quick service that restores airflow and helps the engine breathe properly. A dirty filter can hurt fuel economy and throttle response.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool down before working near the air box.
  • Keep dirt, leaves, and tools out of the intake opening.
  • Do not run the engine with the air box open.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is off.
  • Have the new air filter ready before removing the air box cover.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air box

  • Locate the air filter box on the engine side of the engine bay.
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver or flat-blade screwdriver to remove the air box cover fasteners, if equipped.
  • Release any metal clips by hand or with a trim clip tool.
  • Lift the cover straight up. Keep it level so dirt does not fall inside.

Step 2: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old air filter out of the housing by hand.
  • Check the bottom of the air box for leaves, dust, or debris.
  • Wipe the inside of the housing clean with a dry cloth if needed.

Step 3: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the rubber edge sits flat all the way around.
  • Do not force it.

Step 4: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Set the cover back on the air box.
  • Engage all clips by hand.
  • Reinstall the fasteners with the Torx T20 screwdriver or flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Tighten snugly only. Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs) if your cover uses screws.

Step 5: Final check

  • Confirm the cover is seated evenly and all clips are locked.
  • Close the hood.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual intake noise.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the engine idles normally.
  • Make sure no warning lights are on.
  • Recheck the air box cover after a short drive if it was disturbed.
