🔧 Tundra - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the engine. On your Tundra, this is a quick service that helps maintain airflow and engine performance. The air filter lives in the air box under the hood and can usually be changed in just a few minutes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Make sure the engine is off and cool before opening the air box.
  • Keep loose clothing, hair, and hands away from the engine bay.
  • Do not let dirt, leaves, or tools fall into the intake opening.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat trim tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was just running.
  • Have the new filter ready before opening the air box so the intake stays exposed for the shortest time.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the air box

  • Release the hood latch, then secure the hood.
  • Find the black plastic air box near the front of the engine bay on the passenger side.
  • Tip: The air box usually has clips or screws on the lid.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Use a flat trim tool or by hand to release the retaining clips on the air box lid.
  • If your air box uses screws, remove them with the correct screwdriver or socket.
  • Lift the lid carefully so nothing falls into the intake tube.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the old filter straight out of the air box.
  • Check the air box for leaves, dust, or debris and wipe it clean with a dry cloth if needed.
  • Tip: Do not use compressed air inside the engine intake.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around the sealing edge.

Step 5: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Set the lid back on the air box and align it correctly.
  • Use your hands to snap the clips back into place or reinstall any screws you removed.
  • Make sure the lid is fully sealed so unfiltered air cannot enter the engine.

Step 6: Final check

  • Close the hood.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual air leaks or whistling sounds.
  • If the engine runs normally, the job is complete.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the air box is fully latched and sealed.
  • Check that no tools or rags were left in the engine bay.
  • No scan tool or reset procedure is required.
