🔧 4Runner - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4Runner’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and debris out of the intake tube (the big plastic/rubber air tube).
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was running.
  • Have a clean towel ready so you don’t drop dirt into the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a small flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box near the front of the engine bay, connected to the intake tube.

Step 2: Unlatch the air box clips

  • Use your hands (no tool needed) to release the metal retaining clips around the edge of the air box lid.
  • Tip: Support the lid so it doesn’t snap back.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the top half of the air box just enough to access the filter element.
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe dust out of the lower air box (do not push dirt into the intake opening).

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Slide the new engine air filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge (gasket) sits flat all the way around; no corners folded.
  • Tip: A pinched seal can cause unfiltered air leaks.

Step 5: Close the air box and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the lid fully, making sure it seats evenly.
  • Snap all the metal clips back into place by hand.
  • Use a small flashlight to do a final visual check that the lid is fully closed along the entire seam.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for hissing/whistling (can indicate the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check that all clips are latched and the air box lid seam is even.
