📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key (or keep the key fob away from the car).
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box (air cleaner housing) near the front/side of the engine bay, connected to a large intake tube.
Step 2: Open the air filter box
- Use nitrile gloves and unclip the metal retaining clips around the air box by hand.
- If your air box uses clips, flip each clip up and away until the lid can lift.
- Don’t yank; the lid should lift easily.
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter, then pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to note how the filter sits (which side faces up/out).
Step 4: Clean the air box (lightly)
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust inside the lower air box.
- Do not use compressed air here; it can push dirt into the intake.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure the filter’s rubber edge (gasket) sits flat all the way around so it seals.
Step 6: Close and latch the air filter box
- Lower the lid back into place by hand.
- Re-secure all the retaining clips by hand until fully latched.
- Visually confirm the lid is evenly seated on all sides.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
- Listen for whistling or hissing (can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed).
- Recheck the clips and the lid seating if anything sounds abnormal.
