🔧 GS - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your GS uses an engine air filter inside the air cleaner box (airbox). Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and keeps dirt from damaging the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers away from the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not drop anything into the airbox or intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was recently running.
  • Have a shop towel ready to wipe dust out of the airbox.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air cleaner box

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the large black plastic airbox connected to the intake tube (the tube leading toward the engine).

Step 2: Remove any covers blocking access (if equipped)

  • If a plastic engine cover or snorkel is in the way, gently pop clips up using a flat trim tool or loosen fasteners with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Set clips aside so they don’t get lost.

Step 3: Open the airbox

  • Release the airbox retaining clips by hand; if a clip is tight, carefully help it with a flathead screwdriver.
  • If your airbox uses screws instead of clips, loosen them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (do not remove the entire airbox).
  • Only open it enough to slide the filter out.

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the airbox lid slightly and pull the filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust from the lower airbox half.
  • Avoid wiping dirt into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Insert the new filter into the airbox in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).
  • A bad seal lets unfiltered air into the engine.

Step 6: Close and latch the airbox

  • Close the airbox lid and re-engage all clips by hand.
  • If you loosened screws/bolts, snug them with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (no high torque needed; do not overtighten plastic).

Step 7: Reinstall any covers/snorkels

  • Reinstall any snorkel/cover you removed using the flat trim tool for clips and the 10mm socket with 1/4" ratchet for bolts.
  • Do a final visual check that nothing is left loose in the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • Listen for air leaks (a loud hissing/whistling can mean the airbox isn’t fully clipped).
  • Take a short test drive and confirm normal throttle response and no warning lights.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
