🔧 Grand Cherokee - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4? Actually, for your Grand Cherokee, replacing the engine air filter is a quick maintenance job that helps your diesel breathe clean air and protects the turbocharger from dirt.

You’ll open the airbox, swap the filter, and make sure the cover seals correctly so no unfiltered air gets in.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the intake tube or airbox.
  • ⚠️ Don’t spray cleaners into the airbox; just wipe with a dry/clean rag.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • 8mm nut driver
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • Torx T25 driver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Clean shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was just running.
  • Take a quick photo of the airbox and intake tube routing so it goes back the same way.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing (airbox)

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic box connected to the intake tube.
  • On your Grand Cherokee, it’s in the engine bay and has either metal latches (clips) or several screws around the lid.

Step 2: Free up the airbox lid (two common setups)

  • If your airbox uses metal spring clips:
    • Release the clips by hand, or gently pry with a flathead screwdriver (medium) if they’re tight.
  • If your airbox lid uses screws:
    • Remove/loosen the lid fasteners using a Torx T25 driver (some are quarter-turn captive) or an 8mm nut driver depending on what you see.

Step 3: Loosen the intake tube clamp (only if the lid won’t lift cleanly)

  • Loosen the hose clamp at the airbox outlet using an 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (medium).
  • Tip: Only loosen enough to lift the lid.

Step 4: Lift the airbox lid and remove the old filter

  • Carefully lift the lid upward; don’t force it—look for any missed clip/screw.
  • Pull the old air filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a clean shop rag to wipe out loose dust from the airbox lower half (do not push debris into the intake opening).

Step 5: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Place the new filter into the airbox the same direction the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter’s sealing edge sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).
  • Tip: If it doesn’t sit flat, the lid won’t seal.

Step 6: Refit and secure the airbox lid

  • Lower the lid straight down so it aligns with the lower airbox.
  • Re-engage the metal clips by hand, OR tighten the lid fasteners using a Torx T25 driver / 8mm nut driver.
  • If you loosened the intake clamp, tighten it using an 8mm nut driver or flathead screwdriver (medium) (snug, do not over-tighten).

Step 7: Final check

  • Run your fingers around the lid seam to confirm it’s evenly closed.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm no tools/rags are left in the engine bay.

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Grand Cherokee and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Listen for a whistling/hissing sound near the airbox (can mean the lid or clamp isn’t sealed).
  • If you notice any check engine light after the job, re-check that the airbox lid is fully seated and the intake clamp is tight.
