🔧 Civic - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Civic’s engine air filter cleans the air going into the engine. Replacing it helps maintain power, fuel economy, and protects the engine from dirt. This is a quick, low-risk maintenance job under the hood.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; it can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and put the shifter in P.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box near the engine, connected to the intake tube.
  • It’s the “box” the intake tube snaps into.

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently help release the metal/plastic retaining clips (if they’re tight).
  • Flip all the clips open so the top lid can lift.
  • Don’t pry hard—clips should release smoothly.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust or leaves inside the lower air box.
  • Do not let debris fall into the intake tube.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one sat.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully in its groove all the way around.
  • If it’s not seated, the lid won’t close right.

Step 5: Close the air box and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the lid back into place.
  • Press the lid down evenly, then snap all clips closed by hand.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver only if a clip needs a gentle push to lock.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling (can indicate the air box isn’t fully clipped).
  • Re-check that every clip is fully latched and the lid is flush.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
