🔧 XC90 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and dust out of the intake system. On your XC90, this is a simple service that usually takes only a few minutes and does not require removing major components.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine fully off and cool.
  • Keep loose items away from the intake opening so nothing falls in.
  • Do not use compressed air to clean a dirty filter; replace it instead.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is cool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter housing

  • Locate the engine air box on the engine bay side of the intake system.
  • Use the Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the air box cover screws, if equipped.
  • Release any retaining clips with your hands or a flat blade screwdriver.
  • Lift the cover slowly.

Step 2: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old air filter straight out of the housing.
  • Check the housing for leaves, dirt, or debris.
  • If needed, use a clean cloth to wipe out the inside of the air box.
  • Do not let debris fall into the intake tube.

Step 3: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around.
  • If it does not sit flush, remove it and reseat it before closing the cover.
  • Check the rubber seal all the way around.

Step 4: Reassemble the air box

  • Reinstall the air box cover.
  • Reinstall the Torx screws with the Torx T25 screwdriver, if removed.
  • Snap the retaining clips back into place.
  • Do not overtighten the screws.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a minute.
  • Listen for any air leaks or whistling around the air box.
  • Make sure the hood closes properly and no tools are left in the engine bay.
