🔧 X1 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your X1’s engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the turbo and engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and prevents premature wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

Assumption: Stock factory airbox (no aftermarket intake).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the turbo/intake parts.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt, leaves, and tools out of the open airbox and intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the MAF sensor (airflow sensor); it’s delicate and expensive.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Short 1/4" extension
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Shop vacuum
  • Microfiber towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
  • Lay a microfiber towel over painted areas near where you’ll work to prevent scratches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and find the large black plastic airbox (air filter housing) at the front/side of the engine bay.
  • Look for the intake tube connected to the airbox and the airbox cover held by screws/clips.

Step 2: Remove any covers or ducts blocking the airbox (if equipped)

  • If a plastic duct/cover is in the way, remove fasteners using a trim clip removal tool (this tool pops plastic clips out without breaking them).
  • If there are screws, remove them with a Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Set clips/screws aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Loosen the intake tube clamp (if needed for access)

  • If the intake tube prevents the airbox cover from lifting, loosen the clamp using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet.
  • Only loosen it enough to create slack—don’t remove the clamp completely.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before moving anything.

Step 4: Open the airbox

  • Remove the airbox cover screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • If your airbox uses metal clips, release them carefully using a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Lift the airbox cover straight up. Don’t yank—wiring and the intake tube may limit movement.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out of the airbox.
  • Use a shop vacuum to vacuum out loose debris inside the lower airbox.
  • Wipe the sealing surface (the lip where the filter sits) using a microfiber towel.

Step 6: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the airbox in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around.
  • If the filter has a molded rubber edge, confirm the rubber seal isn’t folded or pinched.

Step 7: Reinstall the airbox cover and fasteners

  • Lower the airbox cover back into place, ensuring no wires/hoses are trapped.
  • Install and tighten the airbox cover screws with a Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if using a small torque wrench; otherwise snug them evenly (do not overtighten).

Step 8: Re-tighten the intake tube clamp and reinstall any ducts/covers

  • Tighten the intake tube clamp using an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 3-5 Nm (27-44 in-lbs) if you have an inch-pound torque wrench; otherwise tighten until snug and the tube cannot rotate.
  • Reinstall any ducts/covers using the Torx T25 screwdriver and trim clip removal tool as needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • Listen for hissing/whistling that could indicate an intake leak (loose clamp or mis-seated airbox cover).
  • If a check-engine light appears, re-check that the airbox is fully closed and the intake tube is fully seated and clamped.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$60 (parts only)

You Save: $60-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
