🔧 Malibu - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain performance and fuel economy, and it’s one of the easiest maintenance jobs on your Malibu.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and keep keys away so the cooling fan can’t start unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Don’t drop dirt into the intake tube/air box.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 15–30 minutes if it was running.
  • 🧼 Have a clean towel ready so no dirt falls into the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and find the air filter box

  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the air filter housing (black plastic box) near the front/side of the engine bay, connected to a large intake tube.

Step 2: Unclip/open the air filter housing

  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box lid by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (a flat-blade driver used to pry or turn slotted fasteners). Don’t force—clips can snap.
  • Lift the air box lid enough to remove the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust inside the bottom half of the air box.
  • Do not use compressed air inside the box; it can push dirt toward the intake.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Place the new engine air filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber seal sits flat all the way around. A pinched seal can leak dirt.

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-latch all clips by hand (use the flathead screwdriver (small) only if needed to guide a clip).
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly seated on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • 🔎 Listen for any hissing/whistling (can indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • 🧾 If you track maintenance, note the mileage/date of the filter replacement.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
