🔧 HR-V - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your HR-V’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth performance and good fuel economy, and it’s one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; don’t start the engine during the job.
  • ⚠️ Don’t let dirt fall into the intake tube or air box.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box on the engine bay (it’s the box connected to a large intake tube).
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box cover by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a flathead screwdriver (small) to gently pry it open.
  • Tip: Don’t force clips; wiggle and lift.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover up just enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out with your hands.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves or dirt inside the bottom half of the air box.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose debris from the air box.
  • Wipe the rim where the filter seals so the new filter can seal tightly.
  • Tip: Don’t push dirt into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Insert the new filter into the air box by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around.
  • If the filter has an “UP” mark or an airflow arrow, match it to the old filter’s orientation.

Step 6: Close the air box and re-clip it

  • Lower the air box cover back into place by hand.
  • Snap all the retaining clips back on by hand (use the flathead screwdriver (small) only if needed to guide the clip).
  • Visually confirm the cover is even all the way around.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing or whistling (that can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check that every clip is fully latched and the cover is seated evenly.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
