šŸ”§ Malibu - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Malibu’s engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner (air box) and keeps dirt from entering the turbocharged engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let the engine cool before working near the turbo/intake area.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers/tools away from the radiator fan area (it can turn on unexpectedly).
  • āš ļø Do not drive with the air box open or the filter missing.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Malibu on level ground and shift to P.
  • Shut the engine off and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • Open the hood and locate the air cleaner housing (air box)—the black plastic box connected to the large intake tube.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air box and clear access

  • Use a flashlight to find the air box cover and the fasteners holding it down (usually metal clips and/or screws).
  • If anything lightly blocks access (like a small wire loom), gently move it aside by hand. Do not pull hard on wiring.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Unclip the air box cover by hand if it has metal clips.
  • If your air box uses screws, loosen them using a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Tip: Don’t force it—recheck for missed clips.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover straight up (or hinge it upward, depending on your Malibu’s housing).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt inside the lower half of the air box.
  • Tip: Don’t let dirt fall into the intake tube.

Step 4: Install the new filter (orientation matters)

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm the same shape and size.
  • Set the new filter into the lower air box exactly the same way the old one sat.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box cover back into place.
  • Reattach all clips by hand, or snug the screws with the small flathead screwdriver.
  • Do a quick visual check that the cover is fully seated (an air leak here can cause a check engine light).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling near the air box (this can mean the cover isn’t sealed).
  • If a check engine light comes on, re-check that the air box cover is fully clipped/screwed down and the intake tube connection wasn’t disturbed.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
