🔧 Camaro - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Camaro’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, which helps performance and fuel economy and can prevent dirt from damaging the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the cooling fan area.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air box open.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension (3")
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Pop the hood and let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was running.
  • Locate the air filter box (air box): a black plastic box connected to the intake tube near the front/side of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air box

  • Use a flashlight to find the air box lid fasteners (either metal clips or small screws/bolts along the edge).
  • If your air box uses screws/bolts: use an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension to loosen them.
  • If your air box uses clips: use a flathead screwdriver to gently pop the clips open. Don’t pry hard—clips can snap.

Step 2: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
  • Pull the old filter straight up and out using gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves or dirt chunks.

Step 3: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use the flashlight and your gloved hand to remove any large debris from the lower air box.
  • Make sure the sealing edge (where the filter sits) is clean so unfiltered air can’t slip past.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat all the way around. If it rocks, it’s not seated.

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid fully, aligning the edges so the seal is even.
  • If screws/bolts: use the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet to snug them evenly (do not overtighten—plastic strips easily).
  • If clips: press them closed by hand; use the flathead screwdriver only if needed to help guide them.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling or hissing (a sign the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • Recheck that all clips/screws are secured and the lid is seated evenly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
