🔧 ILX - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4’s engine air filter cleans the air going into the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth power, good fuel economy, and protects the engine from dust and debris.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; engine must be OFF.
  • ⚠️ Do not blow dirt into the intake tube or air box.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop light
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to P.
  • Set the parking brake and open the hood.
  • Let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a shop light to find the black plastic air box (air filter housing) near the front/side of the engine bay.
  • The air box is connected to a large plastic/rubber intake tube going toward the engine.

Step 2: Unclip or unscrew the air box cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • If your air box uses metal clips: pop them open using a trim clip tool (a small pry tool made for plastic clips).
  • If your air box uses screws: loosen them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Don’t force it; check for a hidden clip.

Step 3: Lift the cover and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Remove the old filter straight up and out.
  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe out loose dirt inside the lower air box.
  • Do not drop dirt into the intake opening.

Step 4: Install the new filter (correct orientation)

  • Place the new filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber edge (gasket) is fully seated all the way around.
  • If the filter has an “UP” mark, keep it facing up.

Step 5: Reinstall the cover and secure it

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver until snug.
  • Do not overtighten screws (plastic can crack).

Step 6: Quick final check

  • Use a shop light to confirm the lid is fully closed with no gaps.
  • Make sure nothing is left in the engine bay (towel, tools, packaging).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling/hissing (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • If you hear a leak, shut off the engine and re-seat the air box lid and filter.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
