🔧 Tacoma - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This helps your engine breathe clean air, improves performance, and can slightly help fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔹Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • 🔹Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair away from moving parts.
  • 🔹Do not unplug any sensors or wiring near the air box.
  • 🔹Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹Flathead screwdriver (6-8mm tip)
  • 🔹Shop towel or clean rag
  • 🔹Work gloves
  • 🔹Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Engine air filter element (3.5L V6) - Qty: 1
  • 🔹Air box lid clips - Qty: 2–4 (only if any are broken)
  • 🔹Shop towels - Qty: 2–3

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔹Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🔹Turn the engine off and remove the key from the ignition.
  • 🔹Open the hood using the hood release inside the cabin, then the safety latch at the front of the truck.
  • 🔹Locate the engine air box: black plastic box on the driver side of the engine bay, with a large hose going to the engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate and inspect the air box

  • 🔹Stand in front of the truck and look toward the driver side of the engine bay.
  • 🔹Find the large black plastic box with a thick rubber hose going toward the engine; this is the air box.
  • 🔹Check around it for any loose wires or broken clips so you know what you’re working with.

Step 2: Release the air box clips

  • 🔹On your Tacoma, the air box lid is usually held on by metal clips along the sides.
  • 🔹Use your fingers to flip each metal clip away from the lid. If they are stiff, gently lever them with the flathead screwdriver.
  • 🔹There are typically 2–4 clips; make sure all are released so the lid can move.

Step 3: Open the air box lid

  • 🔹Once the clips are undone, gently lift the front of the air box lid by hand.
  • 🔹The rear of the lid usually has plastic hinges or tabs that slide into place—do not force it straight up.
  • 🔹Tilt the lid upward and slightly back, just enough to access the filter inside. You do not need to disconnect the large hose.

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • 🔹Grab the edge of the filter with one hand and pull it straight up and out.
  • 🔹Note how it is positioned (airflow direction and which side faces up) so you can install the new one the same way. Take a photo if unsure.
  • 🔹Set the old filter aside; you’ll compare it to the new one.

Step 5: Clean the air box

  • 🔹Use a shop towel to gently wipe any loose dust or leaves from the inside of the air box.
  • 🔹Do not push debris deeper into the intake opening; wipe it out and away.
  • 🔹Do not spray water or cleaners into the air box—keep it dry.

Step 6: Prepare the new filter

  • 🔹Compare the new engine air filter to the old one to confirm the same size and shape.
  • 🔹Look for any markings such as “UP” or arrows; these show correct orientation.
  • 🔹If there are arrows, they usually indicate airflow direction (from air box inlet toward engine).

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • 🔹Place the new filter into the lower half of the air box, matching how the old one sat.
  • 🔹Make sure the rubber sealing edge of the filter sits evenly all the way around the air box lip—no gaps or twists.
  • 🔹Press gently with your hand to confirm it is fully seated.

Step 8: Close and secure the air box lid

  • 🔹Lower the air box lid back into position, making sure the rear tabs/hinges are properly engaged in their slots.
  • 🔹Press down on the front edge of the lid with one hand.
  • 🔹With your other hand, snap each metal clip back into place over the lid. You can use the flathead screwdriver to help if needed, but do not bend the clips.
  • 🔹There are no bolts here, so there are no torque specs; just ensure all clips are fully latched.

Step 9: Final visual check

  • 🔹Inspect all around the air box to confirm the lid is sitting flat and even.
  • 🔹Make sure the large rubber intake hose is still firmly attached to the air box and not twisted.
  • 🔹Confirm you did not leave any tools or rags in the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔹Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • 🔹Listen for any unusual hissing or whistling near the air box, which could mean the lid is not sealed correctly.
  • 🔹If everything sounds normal, take a short test drive; you should not see any warning lights from this job.
  • 🔹Plan to replace the engine air filter about every 15,000–30,000 miles, or more often in dusty conditions.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60–$100 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20–$40 (parts only)

You Save: $40–$60 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2–0.3 hours.
