🔧 Tucson - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Tucson is a simple beginner-friendly job. The air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the turbocharged engine, and a clogged filter can reduce performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and hands away from the cooling fan area.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Tucson on level ground.
  • 🅿️ Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • 🔥 Turn the engine off and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • 📦 Open the hood and locate the air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin, near the driver footwell.
  • Use your fingers to move the hood safety latch at the front of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and make sure it is securely supported.
  • Work only with good lighting.

Step 2: Find the Air Filter Box

  • Use your eyes to locate the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay.
  • The air filter box is the plastic housing connected to the large intake tube that leads toward the engine.
  • A housing is just a protective box that holds a part in place.

Step 3: Release the Air Filter Box Clips

  • Use your fingers to unclip the metal retaining clips on the air filter box cover.
  • A retaining clip is a small spring-style latch that holds the cover shut.
  • Do not force the clips; they should flip open by hand.

Step 4: Lift the Air Filter Box Cover

  • Use your hands to gently lift the air filter box cover upward.
  • You do not need to remove the intake tube.
  • Lift only enough to slide the old filter out.
  • Avoid bending the plastic cover.

Step 5: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hand to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the air filter box.
  • Note the direction and shape of the old filter before removing it fully.
  • The new filter must sit in the same position.

Step 6: Clean the Air Filter Box

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust and leaves from the lower air filter box.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake tube opening.
  • Do not use compressed air toward the engine intake.

Step 7: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air filter box.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The filter should not be folded, pinched, or sitting crooked.
  • No bolts are removed for this repair, so there are no torque specs required.

Step 8: Close the Air Filter Box

  • Use your hands to lower the air filter box cover back into place.
  • Make sure the cover sits evenly on the air filter seal.
  • Use your fingers to snap the retaining clips closed.
  • If the cover will not close easily, reopen it and check that the filter is seated flat.

Step 9: Final Visual Check

  • Use your eyes to confirm the air filter box cover is fully closed.
  • Use your fingers to lightly check that all clips are locked.
  • Make sure no shop towel or packaging is left in the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Tucson and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • ✅ Listen for any unusual hissing or whistling near the air filter box.
  • ✅ If you hear a loud air leak sound, turn the engine off and recheck the cover and clips.
  • ✅ No scan tool, reset, or infotainment menu procedure is required.
  • ✅ Check the engine air filter about every 12,000-15,000 miles, or sooner in dusty conditions.
