🔧 Tucson - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Tucson’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain good fuel economy, smooth idle, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine so you don’t burn your hands.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers away from the radiator fan area (it can turn on unexpectedly).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Hand vacuum

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10–15 minutes.
  • Open the hood and prop it securely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (it’s connected to the intake tube going toward the engine).

Step 2: Release the air box cover (two common setups)

  • Clip style: Unhook the metal retaining clips by hand (use a flathead screwdriver gently if they’re stubborn).
  • Bolt style: Remove any small bolts holding the cover using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • If there’s a hose clamp on the intake tube: Loosen it using a Phillips screwdriver or flathead screwdriver until the tube can move slightly.
  • Don’t force plastic—wiggle it gently.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to fully remove the lid).
  • Pull the old filter straight out using gloved hands.
  • Use a flashlight to note how the filter sits (so the new one goes in the same way).

Step 4: Clean the air box housing

  • Wipe out loose dirt with a shop towel.
  • If needed, use a hand vacuum to remove debris. (Avoid pushing dirt further down the intake.)

Step 5: Install the new engine air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the edges seal all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Reassemble the air box

  • Close the air box lid fully.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug, do not over-tighten).
  • If you loosened a hose clamp, tighten it using a Phillips screwdriver or flathead screwdriver until snug.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any whistling/hissing (can mean the air box isn’t sealed or the clamp is loose).
  • Double-check the air box clips/bolts are fully secured.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $35-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
