🔧 Corolla - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4 engine needs clean air to run smoothly and protect the engine. Replacing the engine air filter is a quick maintenance job that helps fuel economy and keeps dirt out of the intake.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers away from the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and open the hood.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can clearly see the airbox latches.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing (airbox)

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic airbox near the front/side of the engine bay.
  • The air filter sits inside this box, and it’s held closed by metal clips (spring latches).

Step 2: Unclip the airbox cover

  • Use nitrile gloves for grip and to keep dirt off the new filter.
  • Release the airbox metal clips by pulling them outward/down until they pop free.
  • Lift the airbox lid just enough to access the filter. Don’t force the lid upward.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the filter straight out using your gloved hands.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust from the bottom of the airbox.
  • Do not drop dirt into the intake tube.

Step 4: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Place the new filter into the lower airbox tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully seated all the way around the edges.
  • If the filter has a rubber sealing edge, that edge must sit evenly against the airbox all around.

Step 5: Close and re-clip the airbox

  • Lower the airbox lid back into place so the edges align evenly.
  • Snap each metal clip back on by hand until fully latched.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid isn’t pinching the filter.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling (can mean the airbox isn’t fully clipped).
  • Re-check that all airbox clips are fully latched.
