šŸ”§ Camry - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4’s engine air filter sits in the air box and keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it is a quick maintenance job that helps performance and fuel economy, and it can prevent premature engine wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

Assumption: stock air box with metal spring clips.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the car OFF fully and keep the key fob away from the vehicle so it can’t ā€œwake upā€ unexpectedly.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the cooling fan area; it can run automatically on hybrids.
  • āš ļø Do not blow compressed air into the intake tube; debris can be pushed into the engine.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and put the shifter in Park.
  • Power the car OFF and remove the key fob from the cabin area.
  • Open the hood and use the flashlight to locate the air box (black plastic box with a large intake tube).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use the flashlight to find the air box near the front/side of the engine bay with a big rubber intake tube attached.

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Release the metal spring clips holding the air box lid down.
  • If a clip is stuck, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver (go slow so you don’t crack the plastic).
  • Tip: Push the lid down slightly, then unclip.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust from the inside of the air box.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box tray.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge (gasket) seats evenly all the way around—no gaps or folds.
  • Tip: If it won’t sit flat, it’s misaligned.

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-engage all the clips by hand; use the flathead screwdriver only if needed to help guide a stubborn clip.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is fully closed on all sides.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the car and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Take a short drive and confirm no warning lights appear.
