🔧 Rogue - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. A clean filter helps your engine breathe better, improving performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes to avoid touching hot parts.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.
  • đźš Do not smoke or use open flames near the engine bay.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 3" socket extension
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • 🧰 Work light or flashlight
  • 🧰 Shop rag or microfiber cloth
  • 🧰 Mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🧩 Engine air filter element (panel style, for Rogue 2.5L) - Qty: 1
  • 🧩 Air box cover clips or screws - Qty: As needed if any are damaged
  • 🧩 Cleaning wipes or mild cleaner - Qty: 1 (for wiping air box)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park the Rogue on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔄 Turn off all accessories (AC, lights, radio) and remove the key.
  • 🔍 Open the hood using the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • 📦 Locate the engine air box: it is a black plastic box on the driver’s side of the engine bay, with a large hose running from it to the engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the air box and fasteners

  • 🔎 Stand at the front of the Rogue and look to the left (driver side). The air box is a rectangular black plastic box with a large rubber intake hose attached.
  • 🔎 Look for metal clips and/or screws holding the top cover of the air box to the bottom half.
  • đź’ˇ Take a quick photo before disassembly

Step 2: Release air box clips

  • 📎 If your air box uses clips, unhook them by hand. Pull each metal clip away from the cover until it pops free.
  • đź‘‹ If a clip is stiff, gently pry the edge with the flathead screwdriver while pulling with your fingers.
  • đź’ˇ Do not bend clips; they can snap

Step 3: Remove air box screws (if equipped)

  • 🔩 If there are screws/bolts on the air box cover, use the 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove them.
  • 🔩 Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove each screw. Place them in a small container so they don’t get lost.
  • 📏 When reinstalling later, tighten these screws to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • đź’ˇ Only snug the screws; do not overtighten

Step 4: Lift the air box cover

  • 📦 Gently lift the air box cover. It will hinge or slide slightly because the intake hose is still attached.
  • 📦 You do not need to remove the hose. Just lift the cover enough to reach the filter.
  • đź’ˇ Lift slowly to avoid cracking the plastic

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • 🧩 Grab the edge of the old filter and lift it straight up and out of the air box.
  • 🧩 Note how the filter sits: rubber sealing edge usually faces up, and the pleats go down into the box.
  • đź’ˇ Match orientation with the new filter

Step 6: Clean the air box

  • 🧽 Use the shop rag or microfiber cloth to wipe out dirt, leaves, or dust from the bottom of the air box.
  • 🧽 If very dirty, lightly dampen the rag with cleaner, but do not leave liquid puddles inside the box.
  • đź’ˇ Keep debris from falling down the intake tube

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • 🧩 Place the new engine air filter into the air box with the rubber seal facing up and the pleats going down, matching the way the old filter sat.
  • 🧩 Make sure the filter edges sit flat and fully in the groove of the air box so there are no gaps.
  • đź’ˇ Gaps allow unfiltered air into engine

Step 8: Refit the air box cover

  • 📦 Lower the air box cover back into place, making sure it aligns with the bottom half and the filter.
  • 📦 Check that no part of the new filter is pinched or sticking out.
  • đź’ˇ Press down gently to seat the cover

Step 9: Reinstall screws and clips

  • 🔩 If your air box uses screws/bolts, install them by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then snug them with the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • 🔩 Tighten to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) with the 10mm socket. This is “firm but not hard” if you don’t have a torque wrench.
  • 📎 Re-latch all metal clips by pushing them back onto the cover until they click firmly into place.
  • đź’ˇ Double-check every clip and screw is secure

Step 10: Final checks under the hood

  • 🔍 Confirm the air box cover is sitting flat with no gaps along the sealing edge.
  • 🔍 Check that the large intake hose is still fully seated and its clamps are tight (hand-check only).
  • 🔍 Remove any tools or rags from the engine bay.
  • đźš— Close the hood securely.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔑 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Listen for any unusual hissing near the air box that might indicate a gap or loose hose.
  • 🚦Take a short test drive. Throttle response may feel a bit smoother with a clean filter.
  • 📆 Note your mileage and date so you know when the filter was last changed. Many people replace it every 15,000–30,000 miles depending on dust conditions.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
