šŸ”§ Forte - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Forte’s engine air filter sits inside the air box and keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it is a quick maintenance job that helps performance and fuel economy, and prevents premature engine wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10-15 minutes before working near the engine bay.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers, sleeves, and tools away from belts/fans (they can start unexpectedly if the engine is hot).
  • āš ļø Do not run the engine with the air filter removed (unfiltered air can damage the engine).
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Small flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • Have your new air filter ready and keep it clean (don’t set it on a dusty surface).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing (air box)

  • Use a small flashlight to find the black plastic box with a large intake tube attached (this is the air box).

Step 2: Unclip or loosen the air box cover

  • Look for metal clips around the edge of the air box lid.
  • If your air box uses clips: release them by hand while wearing work gloves.
  • If your air box uses a worm-gear clamp or a retaining tab: use a flathead screwdriver to loosen just enough to lift the lid.
  • Tip: Don’t remove the intake tube unless needed.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the lid up carefully. If it doesn’t open far, don’t force it—recheck for another clip or fastener.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand while wearing work gloves.
  • Use a small flashlight to inspect the inside of the air box for leaves or dirt.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface (lightly)

  • Use your work gloves to pick out any large debris.
  • If there’s loose dust, wipe the air box edge (where the filter seals) with a clean, dry cloth you already have available.
  • Tip: Don’t let debris fall into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new engine air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully in its track so it can seal (no corners sticking up).
  • Use a small flashlight to confirm the filter’s gasket edge is evenly seated all the way around.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-latch all clips by hand while wearing work gloves, or snug any loosened clamp using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Do a quick tug test on the lid to confirm it’s locked down and not crooked.

Step 7: Final visual check

  • Use a small flashlight to confirm no tools are left in the engine bay.
  • Make sure the intake tube connection looks seated and straight.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15-30 seconds.
  • Listen for a loud hissing/whistling sound (can indicate the air box isn’t sealed).
  • If you hear anything unusual, shut the engine off and re-check the lid seating and clips.
  • Write down the mileage/date so you know when it was last replaced.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
