šŸ”§ Accord - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Accord’s engine air filter cleans the air going into the engine. Replacing it helps maintain good fuel economy, smooth power, and protects the engine from dirt.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep tools, rags, and fingers away from the radiator fan area.
  • āš ļø Do not start the engine with the air box open (it can suck in debris).
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
  • Pop the hood and support it with the hood prop rod.
  • Let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was just running.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Look for the black plastic air box on the driver-side of the engine bay (it connects to the intake tube).
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before reaching in.

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box lid by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flathead screwdriver. Don’t force it—clips can bend.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove hoses).
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust or leaves inside the lower air box.

Step 4: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge sits flat all the way around so it seals. A bad seal lets dirt bypass the filter.

Step 5: Close the air box and re-secure the clips

  • Lower the air box lid into place, making sure it aligns evenly with the bottom half.
  • Snap all retaining clips back on by hand.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is fully closed on all sides.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10-15 seconds; listen for any hissing (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check the clips and lid alignment if anything sounds off.
  • Note the mileage/date so you know when it was last replaced.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
