🔧 Edge - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Changing your A4’s engine air filter helps the engine breathe clean air, which supports smooth power and good fuel economy. On your Edge, the filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) in the engine bay and is a quick DIY job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; engine must be OFF.
- ⚠️ Don’t drop dirt or leaves into the open intake tubing/airbox.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Flathead screwdriver
- Clean shop towel
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes.
- Open the hood and locate the air filter box (black plastic box connected to the large intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open up access to the air filter box
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Locate the intake tube that runs into the air filter box.
- If your airbox lid is held by metal clips, pop them open using a flathead screwdriver (gently).
- If your airbox lid uses screws/bolts, loosen them using an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Tip: Don’t remove more parts than needed.
Step 2: Lift the airbox lid
- Carefully lift the top half of the air filter box by hand.
- If the intake tube clamp blocks movement, loosen the clamp using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver (a clamp is the metal band that tightens around the rubber tube).
- Hold the lid up just enough to remove the filter. Don’t tug hard on any wiring or hoses.
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dirt/leaves from the lower airbox.
- Do not push dirt into the intake opening.
Step 4: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower airbox by hand.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber edge seals all the way around.
- Tip: If it rocks, it’s not seated.
Step 5: Close the airbox and secure everything
- Lower the airbox lid back into place by hand.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten the fasteners using an 8mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Tighten the intake tube clamp using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver (snug, not over-tight).
- Double-check that no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- Listen for a hissing/whistling sound (can indicate a loose clamp or airbox not fully closed).
- If the check engine light comes on, re-check that the airbox lid is fully sealed and the intake tube clamp is snug.
