🔧 Canyon - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Canyon’s engine air filter sits in the air box under the hood and keeps dust out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain power, fuel economy, and protects the engine from dirt buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- 🧤 Keep fingers clear of the cooling fan and belts (they can start unexpectedly on some vehicles).
- 👓 Wear safety glasses so debris doesn’t fall into your eyes.
- 🔌 No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" socket extension
- Flathead screwdriver
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- 🧊 Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10–15 minutes.
- 🔦 Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the air box (black plastic box with a large intake tube).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air box and intake tube
- Use a flashlight to find the air box near the front/side of the engine bay.
- Look for the large plastic/rubber intake tube running from the air box toward the engine.
Step 2: Loosen the air box cover fasteners
- If your air box uses screws/bolts: use an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" socket extension to loosen them.
- If it uses metal clips: use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry each clip open.
- Keep screws with the cover so none get lost.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid up (you may not need to fully remove it).
- Pull the old filter straight out.
- Use a flashlight to note how the filter sits (which side faces up).
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surfaces
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe dust/leaves from the bottom of the air box and the lid’s sealing edge.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube opening.
Step 5: Install the new engine air filter
- Set the new filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure it sits flat and the rubber edge (gasket) is fully seated all the way around.
- If it won’t sit flat, it’s crooked—re-seat it.
Step 6: Close the air box and secure the fasteners
- Lower the lid carefully so it doesn’t pinch the filter.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten screws/bolts using the 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" socket extension.
- Tighten fasteners snug—do not over-tighten plastic. Torque: not typically specified; tighten snug only.
Step 7: Final visual check
- Use a flashlight to confirm the lid is fully closed and even on all sides.
- Make sure no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.
âś… After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- 👂 Listen for any hissing/whistling (can indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed).
- 🛣️ Take a short drive and re-check that the air box fasteners are still secure.
