🔧 Trax - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Trax’s engine air filter sits inside the air filter box and keeps dust and debris out of the turbo engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the turbo and engine from wear.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let the engine cool before working near the intake tube and engine cover.
- 🛑 Do not drop anything into the open air box or intake tube.
- 🧼 Keep the new filter clean and dry—don’t touch the pleats more than needed.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- 7mm socket

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the hood and locate the air filter box (black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
- Have a shop towel ready to wipe dust from the air box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Open the hood and find the black plastic air filter box near the front/side of the engine bay.
- Follow the large plastic/rubber intake tube—one end connects to the air filter box.
Step 2: Release the air box cover
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the metal clips (if equipped) holding the air box lid.
- If your air box uses screws instead of clips, use a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen them.
- Tip: Loosen screws, don’t remove unless necessary.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid upward carefully (you usually don’t need to fully remove the intake tube).
- Pull the old air filter straight out.
- Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust inside the lower air box.
- Do not let dirt fall into the outlet opening that feeds the engine.
Step 4: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same direction as the old one.
- Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).
- If the filter has a rubber edge, the rubber edge should seal against the air box all the way around.
Step 5: Close the air box and secure it
- Lower the air box lid back into position.
- Refasten the clips using a flat-blade screwdriver (if equipped).
- If screws were loosened, tighten them using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug.
- Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly seated on all sides.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
- Recheck that all clips/screws are secure and the intake tube hasn’t shifted.
