🔧 Sonata - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter keeps clean air flowing into your engine so it runs smoothly and efficiently. On your Sonata, the filter sits inside the air cleaner box in the engine bay and is designed to be a quick DIY service item.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key/fob at least 10 feet away so the hybrid system can’t wake up.
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine (hot parts can burn you).
- ⚠️ Don’t drop anything into the air intake tube or airbox.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Flathead screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the car OFF and open the hood.
- Locate the air cleaner box (the plastic box connected to the intake tube going to the engine).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Find the air cleaner box
- Use a flashlight to locate the large plastic airbox and the intake tube attached to it.
- If a plastic engine cover blocks access, remove any retaining fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then lift the cover off.
Step 2: Release the airbox lid
- Unclip the airbox retaining clips by hand. If a clip is tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- If the intake tube clamp prevents the lid from opening, loosen it with a flathead screwdriver (turn counterclockwise) just enough to move the tube slightly.
- Tip: Don’t fully remove the clamp screw.
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Lift the airbox lid up (or swing it open) and pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use the flashlight to check for leaves/dirt inside the lower airbox.
Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing area
- Wipe the airbox sealing lip with a clean, dry cloth (no tools required) so the new filter can seal properly.
- Do not let debris fall into the intake opening.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Insert the new filter into the lower airbox by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat and the rubber edge is fully seated all the way around.
Step 6: Reclose and secure the airbox
- Lower the lid and make sure it aligns with the lower box.
- Reinstall and snap the clips closed by hand.
- If you loosened the intake tube clamp, tighten it with a flathead screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten).
- If you removed an engine cover, reinstall it using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Sonata and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for any whistling/hissing that could indicate the airbox lid isn’t sealed or the intake clamp is loose.
- Take a short test drive and recheck the airbox clips afterward.
