How to Replace the Engine Air Filter on a 2014 Ford Focus (Step-by-Step Guide)
Tools, parts list, safety tips, and easy airbox removal steps for a quick DIY replacement
🔧 Focus - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Focus uses a panel-style engine air filter inside the air cleaner box (airbox). Replacing it helps maintain proper airflow, fuel economy, and throttle response—especially if the old filter is dirty or clogged.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Let the engine cool so you don’t burn yourself on hot parts.
- 🛑 Keep fingers clear of moving parts; work with the engine OFF.
- 🛑 Don’t drop dirt into the airbox or intake tube.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flathead screwdriver
- 7mm socket
- 8mm socket

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the airbox (black plastic box) connected to the intake tube.
- Take a quick photo before opening it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the airbox
- Use a flashlight to find the airbox in the engine bay (it’s the box that feeds the intake tube going toward the engine).
Step 2: Open the airbox cover
- If your Focus has metal/plastic latches, release them by hand or gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- If your Focus has screws instead of latches, loosen them using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension.
- Lift the airbox lid up enough to access the filter (you usually do not need to remove the whole airbox).
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand while holding the lid up.
- Check the bottom of the airbox for leaves/sand.
Step 4: Clean out the airbox (lightly)
- Use a flashlight to inspect the airbox.
- Wipe out loose dirt with a clean, dry rag (no wet cleaning inside the intake path).
- Do not let debris fall into the intake tube.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Set the new filter into the lower airbox exactly like the old one sat.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the sealing edge is fully seated all the way around (this prevents “unfiltered” air leaks).
Step 6: Close and secure the airbox
- Lower the lid and make sure it lines up evenly with the bottom half.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten the screws using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Tighten screws snug—do not over-tighten (plastic can crack). Snug is enough.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
- Listen for any whistling/hissing near the airbox (a sign the lid isn’t sealed).
- Do a short test drive and confirm normal throttle response and no warning lights.
