🔧 QX80 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing your QX80’s engine air filter helps the engine breathe clean air, which supports smooth power and good fuel economy. This is a simple maintenance job: you’ll open the air filter box, swap the filter, and reseal it so no unfiltered air can sneak in.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot engine parts.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers and tools clear of the cooling fan and belts.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed (dirt can enter the engine).
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 15-30 minutes if it was recently running.
  • Have a clean place ready to set the air box cover so dirt doesn’t fall into it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box connected to the intake tube (the big hose going toward the engine).
  • The air filter sits inside this box, usually secured by metal clips and/or 10mm bolts.

Step 2: Unclip and/or unbolt the air box cover

  • Release the air box clips by hand; if a clip is tight, gently pry it with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • If your air box uses bolts, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Tip: Don’t force clips—wiggle, then release.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the cover enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to fully remove the cover).
  • Pull the old filter straight out with nitrile gloves on.
  • Inspect the air box for leaves/dirt. If needed, wipe it with a clean rag (don’t let debris fall into the intake).

Step 4: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Slide in the new engine air filter with the rubber edge (gasket) seated evenly all the way around.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and isn’t pinched or folded.
  • Tip: A mis-seated filter can cause a whistle or dust bypass.

Step 5: Reassemble the air box

  • Close the air box cover and confirm the edges meet evenly.
  • Reinstall bolts (if equipped) using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension; snug them down evenly (hand-tight). Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs) if using a torque wrench.
  • Re-latch all clips by hand until fully seated.

Step 6: Quick final check

  • Use a flashlight to verify no tools are left in the engine bay.
  • Confirm the intake tube connection is still fully seated and nothing is loose.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for air leaks (hissing/whistling). If you hear one, shut the engine off and re-check that the air box is fully closed and clipped.
  • No scan tool, reset, or relearn is normally required for this air filter replacement.
