🔧 Sequoia - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Sequoia’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps maintain smooth performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep anything from falling into the air intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight
  • Vacuum (shop vac)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 15-30 minutes if it was running.
  • Have your shop towel ready to keep dirt out of the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight and find the black plastic air box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • The “air cleaner housing” is the filter box that connects to the big intake tube going toward the engine.

Step 2: Unlatch and open the air box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and use your gloved hands to flip open the metal latches/clips around the air box lid.
  • Lift the top cover up enough to access the filter. Don’t yank on any hoses.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Use nitrile gloves to lift the filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to cover the open air box opening if you need to pause, so nothing drops inside.

Step 4: Clean the air box (quick check)

  • Use a vacuum (shop vac) to gently vacuum loose dirt/leaves from the bottom half of the air box.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe the sealing edge where the filter gasket sits.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Use nitrile gloves to place the new filter into the air box.
  • Make sure it sits flat all the way around and the rubber seal is fully seated. A crooked filter lets dirt bypass.

Step 6: Close the air box and secure the latches

  • Use nitrile gloves to lower the lid evenly onto the air box.
  • Use your hands to snap each latch/clip fully closed.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the lid is flush on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Recheck the latches/clips one more time with your flashlight.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,200-₹3,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹800-₹2,200 (parts only)

You Save: ₹400-₹800 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
