🔧 Accord - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This helps your engine breathe clean air and can improve performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Always work with the engine off and the key fob away from the car so the engine cannot start unexpectedly.
  • 🔸Let the engine cool for at least 15–20 minutes if it was just running to avoid hot parts.
  • 🔸Do not unplug or pull hard on any electrical connectors or sensor wires near the air box.
  • 🔸Battery disconnection is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔸Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🔸Shop vacuum with small nozzle
  • 🔸Clean microfiber towel
  • 🔸Mechanic gloves
  • 🔸Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔸Engine air filter (for Accord 2.0L Hybrid) - Qty: 1
  • 🔸Dielectric-safe cleaning wipes or mild interior cleaner - Qty: 1 (optional, for wiping air box)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🔸Park your Accord on level ground, shift to P (Park), and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸Turn the ignition fully off and remove the key fob from the car.
  • 🔸Open the hood using the interior hood release, then the safety catch under the hood, and secure the hood prop rod.
  • 🔸Put on your safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the engine air filter box

  • Stand in front of your Accord, looking into the engine bay.
  • The engine air filter box is the large black plastic box on the driver’s side, connected to a big plastic tube going toward the engine.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel to wipe dust off the top so you can clearly see the clips and seams. Clean parts are easier to work on
  • No fasteners to torque on this step.

Step 2: Identify the metal clips on the air box cover

  • Look along the front and sides of the air box cover for spring metal clips that hold the lid down.
  • Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry a clip outward if it’s tight, but mostly they should be movable by hand.
  • Do not remove any bolts or unplug any sensor connectors on the intake tube.
  • No torque specs since you are only releasing clips.

Step 3: Release the air box cover

  • Use your fingers and, if needed, the flathead screwdriver to flip each metal clip away from the cover lip.
  • There are usually 2–4 clips; make sure you’ve released all of them before lifting the cover.
  • Once the clips are released, gently lift the top of the air box cover upward and slightly toward the front of the car to create a gap.
  • Be careful not to strain the attached intake tube or any wiring nearby. Move slowly and gently
  • No torque specs in this step.

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • With the cover lifted, you will see the rectangular engine air filter sitting inside the lower half of the box.
  • Use one hand (wearing mechanic gloves) to grab the filter by an edge or tab and pull it straight up and out.
  • Note how the filter is oriented (which side faces up and which edge faces the front). Take a quick photo if unsure
  • Set the old filter aside; you can compare it to the new one in the next step.
  • No torque specs for removing the filter.

Step 5: Clean the air box interior

  • Use the shop vacuum with small nozzle to carefully vacuum any loose leaves, dust, or debris from the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not push debris further into the intake opening; keep the nozzle above the openings.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel (lightly dampened with cleaner if needed) to wipe the inside surfaces of the lower box and the underside of the lid.
  • Make sure the sealing surface where the filter sits is clean so the new filter seals well.
  • No torque specs in this cleaning step.

Step 6: Prepare and install the new air filter

  • Compare the new engine air filter to the old one to confirm size and shape match.
  • Check for any arrows or markings on the new filter (for “UP” or airflow); most Accord filters simply drop in with the rubber sealing edge around the perimeter.
  • Place the new filter into the lower air box using your hand, making sure:
    • The rubber edge sits flat all the way around.
    • There are no gaps or twists in the filter element.
  • Use your hand to gently press along the edges so it’s fully seated.
  • No torque specs because it’s a drop-in part.

Step 7: Refit and secure the air box cover

  • Lower the air box cover back down, making sure its rear tabs (if present) slide into their slots on the lower box.
  • Use one hand to hold the cover firmly down so it compresses the filter evenly.
  • With your other hand, snap each metal clip back over the lip of the cover. If a clip is stubborn, use the flathead screwdriver to help guide it into place.
  • Check all around the seam between the upper and lower halves to confirm the cover is fully seated and there are no gaps.
  • No torque specs for these spring clips.

Step 8: Final under-hood check and close the hood

  • Use the clean microfiber towel to wipe any remaining dust or fingerprints from the air box and surrounding area.
  • Visually confirm:
    • All clips are fully latched.
    • No tools or rags are left in the engine bay.
  • Remove the hood prop and close the hood firmly.
  • No torque specs required for this step.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸Start your Accord and let it idle for a minute. Listen for any unusual whistling or hissing near the air box that could mean the cover isn’t sealed correctly.
  • 🔸Take a short test drive; the car should feel normal or a bit smoother on acceleration.
  • 🔸There is no reset or scan tool procedure needed after changing the engine air filter.
  • 🔸Check the filter about once a year, or more often in dusty conditions like rural or construction areas.
