🔧 Transit Connect - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your engine and helps it breathe properly. On your Transit Connect, the filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) in the engine bay and is a quick DIY service.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the engine bay.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fan area; fans can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Don’t run the engine with the air filter removed (dirt can enter).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Take a quick photo before disassembly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay (it’s connected to the large intake tube).
- Wipe loose dust around the box seam using a shop towel so dirt doesn’t fall inside when opened.
Step 2: Open the air filter box
- If your air box uses clips, release them with a flathead screwdriver (gently pry if needed).
- If your air box uses screws/bolts, loosen them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Do not force plastic—wiggle and re-try.
Step 3: Remove the old air filter
- Lift the air box cover enough to access the filter.
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Use your flashlight to check the bottom of the air box for leaves or heavy dirt.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surfaces
- Use a shop towel to wipe the inside of the air box and the rubber sealing edge (where the filter sits).
- Do not push dirt down the intake tube opening.
Step 5: Install the new air filter (correct direction)
- Place the new engine air filter into the lower half of the air box.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully inside the frame with no corners folded.
- If the filter has an “airflow” arrow, point it toward the engine (toward the intake tube).
Step 6: Close and secure the air filter box
- Re-seat the air box cover carefully so it doesn’t pinch the filter.
- Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten the fasteners with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug (do not overtighten plastic).
- Do a quick visual check all the way around the seam to confirm it’s fully closed.
Step 7: Final under-hood check
- Confirm the intake tube is still seated and nothing was left loose.
- Remove tools from the engine bay and close the hood.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
- Listen for a loud hissing/whistling (can indicate the air box isn’t sealed).
- If you hear abnormal intake noise, shut off the engine and re-check the air box clips/screws and filter seating.
