🔧 Rogue - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter in your Rogue. This keeps dust and debris out of the engine so it can breathe easily and run efficiently.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Make sure the engine is off and the key is out of the ignition.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes to avoid hot parts.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.
  • 📦 Work in a clean, well-lit area so dirt does not fall into the air intake.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🧰 10mm socket
  • 🧰 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 🧰 3" socket extension
  • 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (6mm tip)
  • 🧰 Phillips screwdriver #2
  • 🧰 Shop vacuum with small nozzle
  • 🧰 Clean shop towels
  • 🧰 Mechanic gloves
  • 🧰 Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 📦 Engine air filter element (2.5L) - Qty: 1
  • 📦 Air box retaining clip set - Qty: 1 (optional backup in case a clip breaks)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Turn off the engine and let it cool for at least 15 minutes.
  • đź’ˇ Open the hood using the interior hood release and then the hood latch under the front edge of the hood.
  • 📎 A “clip” is a small plastic fastener that snaps parts together; open them gently to avoid breaking.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the engine air filter box

  • Open the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
  • Stand in front of the car and look slightly to the driver’s side of the engine bay.
  • You’ll see a black plastic box with a large hose going to it from the front of the car; this is the air filter box (also called the air cleaner housing).

Step 2: Clear access to the air filter box

  • If any small hoses or wiring harnesses are clipped to the top of the air box, gently unclip them by hand or with the flathead screwdriver (6mm tip).
  • Move them slightly out of the way so the lid can open freely. Do not disconnect electrical connectors, just move the harnesses.

Step 3: Release the air box fasteners

  • On the 2014 Rogue, the air box cover is typically held by metal spring clips and sometimes small bolts.
  • Use the flathead screwdriver (6mm tip) to gently pry open each metal clip on the side of the air box lid. They will swing away from the lid.
  • If there are bolts on the air box lid, use the 10mm socket with the 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" socket extension to remove them.
  • Torque when reinstalling bolts: Lightly snug, about 3-4 Nm (2-3 ft-lbs). Do not overtighten, as the plastic can crack.
  • Open clips slowly so they don’t spring off

Step 4: Open the air box lid

  • Once the clips and bolts are released, lift the air box cover up from the side with the clips.
  • The other side of the lid is usually hooked into the lower half of the box, so tilt it upward and slightly back rather than trying to remove it completely.
  • Do not force the lid; if it feels stuck, check again that all clips and bolts are free.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • With the lid raised, you’ll see the rectangular air filter sitting inside.
  • Grab the filter by its edges and lift it straight up and out by hand.
  • Take note of how it sits in the box (which side faces up and how it aligns). This will help when installing the new one.

Step 6: Clean the air box (optional but recommended)

  • Use the shop vacuum with small nozzle to gently vacuum any loose leaves, dust, or debris from the bottom of the air box.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out any remaining dust inside the air box; do not use water or cleaners.
  • Keep vacuum nozzle away from sensors and wiring

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • Take the new engine air filter out of its packaging, keeping it clean.
  • Place it into the air box with the rubber sealing edge seated firmly all the way around.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully down in the box, with no part of the seal folded or twisted.
  • The pleated paper part should face down into the box, matching the old filter’s orientation.

Step 8: Reinstall and secure the air box lid

  • Lower the air box lid back into place, making sure the rear tabs or hooks slide into their slots on the lower half of the box.
  • Hold the lid down evenly with one hand.
  • Snap each metal clip back into place using your fingers or the flathead screwdriver (6mm tip) if needed. You should hear or feel a solid “click.”
  • If your air box has bolts, reinstall them by hand first, then tighten gently with the 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" socket extension.
  • Torque for air box lid bolts: 3-4 Nm (2-3 ft-lbs) (just snug, not tight).
  • If lid won’t sit flat, recheck filter seating

Step 9: Reattach anything you moved

  • Clip any wiring harnesses or small hoses back to their original spots on or near the air box by hand.
  • Make sure nothing is pinched between the air box lid and the lower half.

Step 10: Final check under the hood

  • Look around the air box area to confirm all clips and bolts are secure and the filter is fully enclosed by the lid.
  • Remove any tools or towels from the engine bay.
  • Lower the hood and close it firmly.

âś… After Repair

  • đźš— Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Listen for any unusual hissing or whistling near the air box, which could mean the lid is not sealed correctly.
  • 🧭 Take a short test drive. Throttle response may feel a bit smoother with a clean filter.
  • 📝 Note your mileage and date; plan to check the filter every 12 months or 12,000–15,000 miles, or more often in dusty conditions.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $50–$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15–$30 (parts only)

You Save: $35–$60 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2–0.3 hours.
