🔧 Rogue - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the air filter box under the hood. This helps your engine breathe better, can improve fuel economy, and keeps dust out of the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🦺 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • 🧤 Keep fingers clear of moving parts; do this with the engine OFF only.
  • 🪛 Do not drop tools or debris into the open air intake or air box.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium size)
  • Work light or flashlight
  • Shop towel or clean rag
  • Disposable gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter element (for 2.5L) - Qty: 1
  • Air box cover clips or screws - Qty: 1 set (optional, only if any are damaged)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔁 Turn the engine off and remove the key or switch ignition OFF.
  • 🔎 Open the hood using the inside hood release, then the hood latch under the front edge, and secure the hood prop rod.
  • 🧽 Make sure the area around the air box is reasonably clean to avoid dirt falling inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Stand in front of the Rogue and look slightly to the driver’s side of the engine bay.
  • The air filter box is a black plastic box with a large hose (intake tube) running from it toward the engine.
  • Use the work light or flashlight to clearly see the box edges and fasteners.

Step 2: Identify how the air box cover is held on

  • On the 2019 Rogue, the air box cover is usually held by metal clips at the sides and sometimes small bolts at the corners.
  • Use your eyes and fingers to feel for:
    • Metal clips that flip open, and/or
    • Small bolts with 10mm heads
  • If there are bolts, you’ll use the 10mm socket, socket extension, and ratchet to remove them.

Step 3: Release the air box cover

  • If you have metal clips:
    • Use your fingers or the flathead screwdriver to gently pry and flip each clip off the cover edge.
  • If you have bolts:
    • Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to loosen and remove each bolt.
    • Set bolts aside somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
    • Torque spec when reinstalling: 3–5 Nm (2–4 ft-lbs) — this is “snug,” not very tight.
  • Only loosen what’s needed to lift the cover

Step 4: Lift the air box cover

  • Gently lift the air box cover upward from the side where you removed clips/bolts.
  • The cover is still attached to the intake hose, so don’t force it; just tilt it up and slightly back.
  • If it seems stuck, use the flathead screwdriver gently at the plastic seams to break any seal, but do not pry hard.
  • Do not disconnect any hoses unless absolutely needed

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • With the cover lifted, you’ll see the rectangular air filter sitting in the lower half of the box.
  • Note how the filter is oriented (which side faces up and how it sits in the grooves).
  • Use your hand (wearing disposable gloves) to lift the old filter straight up and out.
  • If there is loose debris in the air box, use the shop towel to carefully wipe it out. Do not push dirt into the intake opening.

Step 6: Install the new air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to make sure:
    • Size and shape match
    • Rubber sealing edge is the same
  • Place the new filter into the air box lower half, with the rubber edge sealing against the box edge.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat, in the molded grooves, with no bending or twisting.
  • Filter must sit fully down, no gaps

Step 7: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Lower the air box cover back into position, making sure:
    • The rear tabs or hinges on the cover slide into their slots on the lower box (if present).
    • The cover lip fully sits over the new filter and lower box edge.
  • If clips are used:
    • Snap each metal clip back into place by hand.
  • If bolts are used:
    • Start each bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
    • Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to tighten each bolt evenly.
    • Torque to 3–5 Nm (2–4 ft-lbs) — just snug; do not overtighten, as the plastic can crack.
  • Run your fingers around the seam of the air box to confirm there are no gaps.

Step 8: Final checks under the hood

  • Use the work light or flashlight to double-check:
    • All clips are latched or all bolts are installed.
    • No tools, rags, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
  • Remove the hood prop rod and close the hood firmly.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute; listen for any unusual whistling or hissing near the air box, which could indicate a gap or loose cover.
  • 🧠 No scan tool, resets, or dashboard menu steps are needed after an engine air filter change on the Rogue.
  • 📅 Plan to check or replace the filter about every 15,000–20,000 km, or more often in dusty conditions.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
