🔧 QX60 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your QX60’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and prevents dirt from wearing internal engine parts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, hair, and loose clothing away from belts and fans.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake and open the hood.
  • Have a shop towel ready to wipe dust from the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box at the front-right area of the engine bay (it’s connected to the large intake tube).

Step 2: Release the air box clips

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Unclip the metal retaining clips on the air box by hand.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle the clip gently.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid just enough to slide the filter out (no need to force the lid far open).
  • Pull the old filter straight out and keep it upright so dirt doesn’t fall into the box.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust inside the lower air box.
  • Wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits so the new filter can seal properly.
  • Do not drop debris into the intake tube.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Slide the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits fully flat with no corners folded.
  • A good seal prevents unfiltered air leaks.

Step 6: Close the air box and re-latch

  • Lower the air box lid into place.
  • Snap the metal clips back on by hand until fully seated.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly closed all the way around.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling or hissing (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check the clips and lid fit if you hear an air leak sound.
