🔧 Impala - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Impala’s engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth performance and fuel economy, and it’s one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers and tools away from moving parts (belts/fans).
  • 🛑 Don’t drop anything into the air intake tube.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Shop towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Pop the hood and make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
  • Locate the air filter box (the plastic box connected to the big intake tube).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and find the air filter housing (large plastic box on the intake tubing).
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before you start.

Step 2: Open the air filter housing

  • If your housing uses metal clips, release them using a flathead screwdriver (gently pry if needed).
  • If your housing uses screws/bolts, loosen them with an 8mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Don’t force it—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the air box lid enough to slide the filter out.
  • Pull the old filter straight up/out by hand and note how it sits (this helps you install the new one correctly).

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt from the bottom of the air box.
  • Wipe the sealing edge where the filter gasket sits so it seals well.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close and secure the housing

  • Close the air box lid fully so it’s seated evenly.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten the fasteners using the 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • If any intake duct cover clips were removed, reinstall them using a trim clip tool.
  • Snug is enough—don’t over-tighten plastic.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (that can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Do a quick visual check that all clips/fasteners are secured and the intake tube is still fully seated.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
