🔧 Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement

- ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and fingers away from the engine bay while working.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter box is open.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition completely off and remove the key.
- 🧊 Let the engine cool for a few minutes if it was recently driven.
- 💡 Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop or hood struts.
- 📦 The engine air filter sits inside the black plastic air filter box in the engine bay.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Air Filter Box
- Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air filter box on the driver-side area of the engine bay.
- The air intake hose is the large rubber tube connected to the air filter box and running toward the engine.
- Tip: Follow the big rubber hose.
Step 2: Release the Air Filter Box Clips
- Put on nitrile gloves to keep your hands clean and improve grip.
- Use your fingers to flip open the metal retaining clips on the air filter box lid.
- A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the plastic cover closed.
- No bolts need to be removed for the normal air filter replacement on your Highlander.
Step 3: Open the Air Filter Box Lid
- Use both hands to gently lift the air filter box lid upward just enough to access the filter.
- Do not pull hard on the connected rubber intake hose.
- If the lid feels stuck, wiggle it gently by hand instead of forcing it.
- Tip: Lift only as much as needed.
Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter
- Use your hands to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the air filter box.
- Notice how the old filter is sitting before removing it fully.
- The rubber edge of the filter must sit flat in the air box when the new one is installed.
Step 5: Clean the Air Filter Box
- Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust, leaves, or debris from the lower part of the air filter box.
- Do not push dirt into the intake opening.
- Do not spray cleaner or water into the air filter box.
Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter
- Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air filter box.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and fully inside the air box groove.
- The rubber sealing edge should not be folded, pinched, or sticking out.
- Tip: A flat seal prevents dust leaks.
Step 7: Close the Air Filter Box
- Use both hands to lower the air filter box lid back into place.
- Make sure the rear tabs of the lid are seated correctly before closing the clips.
- Use your fingers to snap the metal retaining clips back into place.
- No torque spec applies because this air filter box uses hand-operated clips.
Step 8: Final Visual Check
- Use a flashlight to check around the air filter box.
- Make sure the lid is fully closed and the filter is not visible around the edges.
- Confirm the intake hose is still connected and not twisted or loose.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- 👂 Listen for any loud hissing or whistling from the air filter box area.
- 🔍 If you hear unusual intake noise, turn the engine off and recheck that the lid and clips are fully seated.
- 🧾 No scan tool reset, infotainment reset, or programming is required.
