🔧 Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Highlander’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and can improve throttle response if the old filter is dirty.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the engine off and let it cool 10-15 minutes before working near the intake.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- Clean shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Have a shop towel ready so nothing falls into the air box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Find the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to locate the black plastic air box near the front/side of the engine bay with a large intake tube attached.
Step 2: Release the air box clips
- Release the metal retaining clips by hand.
- If a clip is stubborn, gently pry it with a flat-blade screwdriver. Don’t force plastic parts.
Step 3: Open the air box
- Lift the top half of the air box up enough to access the filter.
- If needed, use the shop towel to wipe loose dirt around the opening so it doesn’t drop inside.
Step 4: Remove the old filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand and note how it sits (orientation matters).
- Use the flashlight to look inside the lower air box.
Step 5: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the rim where the filter seals.
- Do not spray cleaner or blow debris into the intake.
Step 6: Install the new filter
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully in its “track” all the way around. A pinched edge can leak dirt.
Step 7: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the air box lid back into place.
- Re-engage all retaining clips by hand.
- Torque: Not applicable (no fasteners are typically torqued for this step).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for any whistling/hissing that could indicate the air box isn’t fully clipped closed.
- Take a short drive and confirm normal acceleration.
