🔧 Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Highlander’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps performance, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans (they can turn on unexpectedly).
  • ⚠️ Don’t drop anything into the open air box or intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Have a towel ready to wipe out loose dust in the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and look for the black plastic air box on the passenger-side front area of the engine bay.
  • Use a flashlight to clearly see the metal retaining clips around the air box.

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the retaining clips by hand; if a clip is tight, gently pry it with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Tip: Don’t force clips sideways.

Step 3: Open the housing and remove the old filter

  • Lift the top half of the air box enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove any hoses for this).
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom half of the air box for leaves or dirt.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing area

  • Wipe loose dust/debris from the air box and sealing edges using a clean shop towel.
  • Do not wipe deep into the intake tube; keep debris out of the opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Insert the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around the edges (this prevents unfiltered air leaks).
  • Tip: If it won’t sit flat, it’s misaligned.

Step 6: Close the air box and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the air box cover back into place.
  • Reinstall and snap all clips closed by hand; use the small flathead screwdriver only if needed to guide a stubborn clip.
  • Do a quick visual check that the cover is evenly closed on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box isn’t fully sealed.
  • Recheck the clips and the air box seam if anything sounds unusual.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)
